What are some good vintage board games?

Just played an older game called “Stop Thief” at a friend’s house…had never heard of it before but really liked it.

How old is vintage? Stop Thief came out in 1979, so let’s use that as a jumping-off point.

As another poster suggested, Survive! (1982) is a fantastic game. The game did not “change” to Escape from Atlantis (1986), but rather Escape from Atlantis developed from Survive, and has similarities and differences from it’s predecessor.

Acquire is a great light-economic game that has been around since 1962. Players lay tiles on a gridded board and buy stock in various hotel chains (changed to technology company chains in the most-recent version). Through shrewd purchasing and mergers, players make money to win the game.

Can’t Stop (1980) is a fun and quick press-your-luck dice rolling game. Players roll and move their score markers in the columns on the board… but watch out! If you can’t move or place a marker on a turn, you lose all of your progress.

For a more strategic and tactical bent, Diplomacy (1959) is a classic game of conquest and negotiation. Players are working to control power locations, but the whole of the game comes down to negotiating, forming alliances, backstabbing, and treachery.

For a taste of the deduction element of Stop Thief, you might look for Clue: The Great Museum Caper (1991). The game itself actually is nothing like the original Clue game — one player plays the art thief who is moving through the museum unseen, the other players are trying to deduce where the thief is by clues given by missing paintings, and information conveyed by the security cameras. If the thief is caught in the act, he or she must attempt to escape the clutches of the investigators.
